"I don't need luck though. I don't want it. I've always had to struggle and fight, and that's made me strong. It's made me who I am." -Zuko, from Avatar: The Last Airbender
"Be decisive."
"I won't speak of the dream my racing heart conceals."
----------------------------------------------------------------
The past few weeks have made me vaguely aware of something that I couldn't put my finger on, but it was these last few days of long waits and fateful meetings that helped me to truly understand something: A man whose pride is intact can do great things and sacrifice all for king and country, but a man who has lost his pride is like a ghost, a shell of his former self. Taking away someone's pride can be like breaking the legs they stand on. Perhaps the outward symptoms are different, but I think something similar happens for women as well.
It's pretty incredible that we're in our 20s now, on the brink of experiencing some of the greatest adventures and most painful disappointments we'll ever have. It's hard to imagine that in just 5 to 10 years time, we may no longer get to be the main characters in our lives. Slowly, year by year, we may find ourselves making way for kids, or a cause, or an organization; one day we will wake up and be faced with our existence as side characters in a much bigger story.
Hopefully, when we come to live for something so far outside ourselves, it will be because of abiding joy and not restless anxiety.
