Music is Action

Pedo-bait, cool music instruments and kawaii music... I don't know what K-ON is really about but I think it probably became a smash hit. The theme and content choices hit the dot exactly in terms of appeal. A point to remember.

It just occurred to me that all the climactic action scenes in movies would be nothing without great musical scores, and it's actually music that creates the great bulk of energy of thrilling sequences...

"Man is accustomed to asserting himself; his clients believe in his competence; he can act naturally: he infallibly makes an impression. Woman... In business, in administrative work, she is precise, fussy, quick to show aggressiveness. As in her studies, she lacks ease, dash, audacity. In the effort to achieve she gets tense. Her activity is a succession of challenges and self-affirmations. This is the great defect that lack of assurance engenders: the subject cannot forget himself. He does not aim gallantly toward some goal: he seeks rather to make good in prescribed ways. In boldly setting out toward ends, one risks disappointments; but one also obtains unhoped-for results; caution condemns to mediocrity." -Simone de Beauvoir on the detrimental effects of stereotyping in educational settings on women in her time

"There isn't any fight on this earth that is determined by effort alone. Every challenge we face requires us not just to push ourselves physically, but to win a fight in our spirit and in our minds, to keep our confidence and our calmness in the face of troubling times.

There are two sides to believing: One where you grit your teeth and crawl through dark places, and another where you look at the sky, and know in your heart that you can fly." -Me... Will edit this someday so it gets less cheesy.

What I did may not have been wrong... But it is undeniable that the way Wanyi suggested is ... better... Note to self: Think about this. Ask others about this and then write about it and remember it.

Comical

Sometimes it's easy to forget that... Friendship may just be a game we're playing to pass the time.

----------------------------------

When giving out compliments, imagine that you're giving out a slice of cake. Would the recipient most enjoy something light and fluffy, or something thick and oozing with rich sweetness? If he/she is worried that he'll get fat, then sometimes the best cake is no cake at all. An abstract cake is best in such circumstances.

"Everybody likes cake." Something to remember.

Also, don't let yourself get caught if the cake is a lie.

Sincerity

"In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength." -General Iroh, Avatar: The Last Airbender

Awesome cartoon. The shout out episode to the WWF was epic. Now they have this cool blind Earth bender girl following them.

(Post-Note: 3 seasons down. THIS SHOW IS AWESOME.)

-----------------------------------

Long conversations delight, and long journeys together are a pleasure.

During my trip to Cambodia, we visited several orphanages and homes for underprivileged kids. On one of those trips, I was having diarrhea and decided to stay in the van instead of interacting with the kids. My sickness wasn't the only thing keeping me in the van, though. During the short time I was out there, I felt awkward and unconfident around the kids. I didn't know how to relate to them. You can't talk shop with them. You can't banter with them. You can't even exert the force of your masculine charms on them.

Watching Marie and Mych laughing and smiling with the kids made me think that when it comes to children, sincerity and warmth are of the utmost importance. Even if you're nervous, being open and sharing some of that emotion is important to building an honest connection; if you don't lie to them, it is... less likely... that you will end up seeing yourself as a liar, or lying to yourself. Exuding warmth lets them know that they are loveable, and that you find it a pleasure to be with them.

On a side note...

I think that there is a significant stream of public opinion that has taken a very wrong turn with regards to ideas about love and identity/selfhood (Yeap, I'm with the other stream). To reduce the length of a long and rambling rant-
Just as much as love is about tenderness and taking the time to understand your loved ones, it can also be about uncompromising measures and harsh silences. As much as I hate my Mom sometimes for some of her extreme behavior, I think we (her kids) would be in a sorry state without her stern hand and discipline.

I also think 'love yourself', 'be proud of who you are', and 'be yourself', have also become half-truths which prize personal indulgence and comfort above all else. To me, loving and accepting yourself means that you don't let yourself be undiscerningly swayed by the opinions of every other person about who or what you ought to be. But that doesn't mean that you deny the importance of change and improvement and maturity. It doesn't mean that you ignore the likelihood that those who love you have some very important things to say about your character.

But anyway...

Recently I joined a Youth Expedition Project to help kids in Vietnam. On the first day, we had to introduce ourselves. I was feeling a little experimental so I decided to think up a good line and start with a sarcastic opener.

It totally flopped. Barely got a chuckle.

Now I could explain this away by suggesting a lack of appreciation of sarcastic humor on the part of the audience, or by theorizing the existence of implicit social constraints on interaction in that context (DAMN THOSE LAWFUL GOOD DO-GOODERS). But I think sincerity had a part to play as well (Sorry if it seems like I'm forcing a point, haha). Good humor and laughter aren't necessary products of sincere interaction, but now I know for certain that if your behavior extends from what you feel is your true sense of self, then you will almost always feel grounded and confident. There isn't always a need to make a splash. High aggro means you do high DPS, but it also means you'll always have some asshole on your back. ITS BETTER TO BE A PRIEST AND TREAD THE LINE BETWEEN LIGHT AND DARKNESS AND MANIPULATE THE TEAM FROM THE SHADOWS

...

GDOP last Sunday was a good experience. It brought me out of my shell and helped me progress in terms of praying openly with others. It was discomfiting at times though; listening to much more grounded Christians praying made me feel nervous and unconfident. I think that in times like these, I have to try harder to listen to God and to be sincere in my own words, or else I will get very lost.

Anger and other assorted feelings

On Thursday, I went with Mych to Ikea to take a look around. I think her idea of walking around places just to find inspiration for things pretty good. I left the place with a few good ideas to pursue in the next two months.

I finished IPPT in the evening after an incredible 3 hours because I came late for the registration. I got home and watched Glee reruns, followed by clips of Pastor Rony Tan's tirade against other religions. Senseless. Distasteful. Offensively illogical. Offensive.

-------------------------------------

Friday was... an interesting day. A bunch of us Soci peeps met up at Sultan Kebabs to eat (Note to reader: Even if you're dying of starvation, do not ever go to the stingy, overpriced Turkish Kebab place at Far East plaza). We sat there and argued over what activity to do after the meal, and we finally settled on playing LAN. The shops were full though, so we ended up crossing the road to play board games at Mind cafe. Vithiya, Sharon and Fadzil turned up later, followed by Clara and her friend.

The highlight for me though, was coaxing Ashley and Vithiya to play L4D2 with us. Heh. That was fun, and Ashley is a pretty quick study. Vithiya seemed to enjoy herself too, and Fadzil shot me a lot (Though I did incap him that one time). After that, the last thing we did was to eat at Aston's.

On a side note, throughout the day, I idly wondered about the kind of things that got me worked up or angry, and the past offenses or hurt I refused to let go of. It made me remember a newspaper article about a man on trial for manslaughter for the death of his two-year old daughter.

He was known to be a loving and caring father, and one day he was on his way home with a Barbie doll for his little girl. When he opened the door, he saw her playing with a packet of his cigarettes. Panicked and enraged by the sight, he rushed at her and beat her on her back, scolding her for touching them. The little girl then slumped over a few minutes later, unable to move. Apparently his blow had burst a major blood vessel near her heart, and blood was welling up in her body. She died soon after.

One can only imagine how that father must now be feeling guilt and shame on so many levels: Guilt because he didn't quit smoking, guilt because his rage blinded him, guilt for beating his innocent girl to death.

What that story left me thinking was about the father's sudden anger and fury. And I thought that although some of us have hotter tempers than others, maybe it takes a lifetime of letting your anger fly over smaller, less significant things, for it to develop to the point where you can be so blinded by your rage that you could hurt a helpless child.

Maybe it takes a lifetime of lustful thoughts and sideways glances for a man to cheat on his wife. Maybe it takes more than just that, and every test we ever cheated on, every lie we ever told can come back to haunt us like this.

Every race we've ever passed was possible because we pushed ourselves every step of the way. Every performance we've ever had was made out of tens, maybe even hundreds of practices. Every friendship we cherish is made up of a gallery of big and small moments, 21st birthdays and daily silences together.

Our life exists as it is not simply because of chance or fate, but because of the way we choose to live in each new situation... My anger is clearly neither rational nor justifiable now. But my expectation of you will remain the same.

-------------------------------------

Woke up this morning and realized that I'd been dreaming of Fadzil explaining misconceptions about Islam the night before. . I woke up this morning, thinking of .

It made me think about the things we ought to love but don't, and the terrible things we hanker for/obsess about/obsess over/hanker after(?)/long for.

We live in a big global world now, a world of cities and bureaucracies and universities and job vacancies in a set social structure. Within this structure, you can be powerful or impotent. You can be a star or mud. You can be colorful or conservative. But you must always make money, and you mustn't ever exceed the amount of crazy allotted to you based on your job requirements (ALWAYS EXCEED THE AMOUNT OF CRAZY).

What if we lived in a world where it was normal for everyone to walk around openly with two personalities inside them? What if we could live in a world where ADHD was considered completely unremarkable? After all, there was once a time where classrooms didn't exist, and people spent their whole lives out in the fields, running, doing, playing, farming, copulating, and sometimes dying early of the plague or of bandits (Less people die early of the plague now but the bandits will always be around). Well, we don't live in that world, but still.

TV characters are always one-dimensionally awesome or melancholy, admirable or detestable, congruent or conflicted. They can never be boring or irrelevant or inconsistent, because viewers watch them to admire or hate just one or two qualities about them. People in real life though, are inconsistent characters, and often that inconsistency is inconsequential to the performance of many socially-mandated functions. There's always a child and an adult, a villain and a hero, a knight or a wizard (No dual-spec allowed), a clown and a captain, and many other characters inside us. So many faces, but so few places where they're acceptable, and even fewer the friends whom we can share all of them with.

Hold me now, I'm six feet from the edge, and I'm thinking...

It occurred to me that those of us who tirelessly train to improve an ability, don't do it simply for the sake of perfecting a technique; we do it to get a hold of that incredible feeling, the feeling we get when what we will to happen seems to correspond perfectly with changes to our surroundings. It's that moment when technique is no longer an issue, and desire is the only thing needed to make a difference...

The last two days have been productive, and now I'm sitting here left with two stories to write, one story to edit, and one poem left undone. The trouble is that it's a love poem, and it has to be original. Meh. They're ridiculously hard to write. The assignment that had us imitate Catallus (THE poet of poetry about love and passion) was hard enough.

Anyway, one of the poems was an assignment where you had to write something that let your personality shine through as much as possible. After much contemplation and self-reflection, I decided to be as ridiculous as possible. The following is what resulted:

"Level Ninety-Nine"

Ninety-nine, ninety-nine,
Level ninety-nine!
Dual spec-ed and fully buffed
And now I'm doing just Fine!

Ninety-nine, ninety-nine,
Level ninety-nine!
I'm a fire-ballin' wizard
and the magic is Mine!

Ninety-nine, ninety-nine,
Level ninety-nine!
Doesn't matter that I can't get girls
to drink with me-Wine!

Ninety-nine, ninety-nine,
Level ninety-nine!
It's okay because tonight's main course
is Noob-I shall Dine!

Ninety-nine, ninety-nine,
Level ninety-nine!
A lowly creep has dropped phat lewt
I think it's a Sign!

Ninety-nine, ninety-nine,
Level ninety-nine!
The screen is blank, the plug is out-
My Mom's crossed the-Line!
